Dentures Q & A

What are dentures?

Nature ImageryDentures are artificial teeth made to replace permanent teeth that are missing or require extraction. If some or all of your teeth are missing, dentures can help:

  • Optimize facial contours
  • Improve your ability to chew food
  • Make your speech clearer
  • Build self-confidence
  • Make your smile aesthetically pleasing

Various types of dentures are available at TLC Dental. Dr. Phan and his dental team help you find dentures that match your personalized needs and desired outcome.

What are the different types of dentures?

Dr. Phan and his team offer a variety of fixed and removable dentures, including:

Conventional dentures

Conventional dentures are full removable dentures you can place in your mouth and take out when you eat and sleep. If you have any remaining natural teeth, Dr. Phan can remove them before getting fitted for conventional dentures.

Immediate dentures

You can wear immediate removable dentures the same day as extraction, so you don’t have to live without teeth while your gums heal. After healing is complete, you might require new or adjusted dentures.

Overdentures

Overdentures can fit over your remaining natural teeth, as long as they are strong and healthy.

Implant-supported dentures

Implant-supported dentures are overdentures that fit over dental implants, which are artificial titanium tooth roots that get surgically implanted into your jawbone.

What should I expect when getting dentures?

Before getting dentures, Dr. Phan completes a comprehensive dental exam and takes dental X-rays. Afterward, he lets you know which type of dentures are best for you. He and his team can prepare your mouth for dentures by:

  • Placing dental implants
  • Reshaping remaining natural teeth
  • Extracting loose or decaying teeth

If you receive dental implants or require extraction, a healing period is necessary before getting fitted for dentures. A dental lab creates your new custom-made teeth, and Dr. Phan ensures your new set of artificial teeth fit well before you begin wearing them.

How should I care for my dentures?

Practice good oral hygiene before and after you receive dentures. Brush your teeth, gums, cheeks, the roof of your mouth, and tongue before placing removable dentures in your mouth. Brush dentures twice daily to remove plaque or food particles and prevent staining.

Rinse your denture before brushing them. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and denture cleaner to keep them clean. Dr. Phan can let you know which denture products he recommends.

Call TLC Dental if your dentures become loose or damaged, and attend routine dental checkups every six months.
