Wisdom Tooth Extraction Q & A

What is wisdom tooth extraction?

Nature ImageryWisdom tooth extraction is an outpatient procedure that removes one (or all) of your wisdom teeth. Wisdom teeth are at the very back of your mouth and are the last of your permanent teeth to come in.

Because of their location, wisdom teeth are often difficult to clean. They can also increase the risk of crowding and impaction. Wisdom tooth extraction prevents these and other issues, ensuring your mouth stays healthy and problem-free.

Is wisdom tooth extraction safe?

Wisdom tooth extraction is safe and typically well-tolerated. To minimize the risk of complications, let Dr. Phan know about any prescription medications or supplements you take regularly. In addition, alert him to underlying health problems like diabetes, high blood pressure, or kidney disease. He’ll want to make sure all of these issues are stable before moving forward with the procedure.

What does wisdom tooth extraction involve?

Dr. Phan and the TLC Dental team perform wisdom tooth extractions on an outpatient basis. Prior to removing your wisdom teeth, Dr. Phan administers anesthesia to numb your gums, tooth roots, and mouth. Once you’re comfortable, he begins removing your teeth.

If your wisdom teeth are above the gum line, Dr. Phan uses a tool called an elevator to loosen them. He then uses forceps to remove each tooth.

If your wisdom teeth are impacted and below the gum line, Dr. Phan makes an incision along your gums. He carefully splits each tooth into several sections and removes them one at a time. Afterward, he stitches up the incision and rinses out your mouth. Most wisdom tooth extraction appointments take 45 minutes or less.

What is recovery like following wisdom tooth extraction?

Following a wisdom tooth extraction, it’s normal to experience some pain, swelling, and increased sensitivity. Take over-the-counter pain medication or apply a bag of ice to your cheek. For the first 48 hours, eat only soft foods like mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, or applesauce. In addition, avoid smoking or drinking alcohol and caffeine.

Most people fully recover within three or four days. Be patient and follow Dr. Phan’s recovery instructions carefully.
